Surgery

Keeping your pet safe

Our caring veterinarians and team members want your pet to have a pleasant experience while at our clinic. We are dedicated to keeping your pet safe and well cared for on the day of surgery. We want to alleviate your stress on surgery day with the comfort of knowing your pet will be kept pain free, safe and warm on the day of surgery.Pre-Surgical Blood Work
A small blood sample will be taken prior to surgery. The blood’s red cell level, protein, sugar, liver and kidney values are all evaluated.

IV Fluids

All pets undergoing anaesthesia need IV fluid therapy! This is a crucial safety measure. It is needed to maintain blood pressure and adequate circulation. It also enables us to give drugs quickly and directly into the bloodstream.

Temperature Control

During surgery, we actively warm your pet with a heating blanket that blows hot air onto your pet’s body. Without adequate warming, your pet’s body temperature would drop. Maintaining a normal body temperature is an important safety measure.

Advanced Monitoring

The anaesthetist, a Registered Veterinary Technician highly trained in anaesthetic delivery and monitoring is always at your pet’s side. She will be monitoring your pet’s blood pressure, oxygen level, carbon dioxide level, pulse, pulse pressure, respiratory rate and depth of anaesthetic. To ensure the anaesthetic is as safe as possible, these levels must be monitored and maintained at all times.

Pain Control

Keeping your pet pain free is very important to us. Your pet will receive a combination of drugs to revent pain before waking from surgery. Local anaesthetics are used in addition to our general anaesthetic when appropriate. Take home pain medication will be provided to your pet to keep them comfortable in the days after surgery.

Progress Exam

We want to ensure your pet heals well. An exam will be scheduled 7 to 10 days after surgery.

Nausea Prevention

An injection can be given to prevent your pet from becoming nauseated and vomiting from the anaesthetic drugs.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy will provide additional pain control. It will decrease the amount of swelling and will speed healing so your pet feels better faster!

Microchip Identification

A reliable form of identification. A small metal chip is placed over the shoulders, beneath the skin. This chip can be scanned by any veterinary clinic or animal shelter.
